Adora-bao! These steamed buns from Hong Kong City Mall are almost too cute to eat

Located in the bustling shopping center of Hong Kong City, Ngoc Lan Bakery serves steamed buns that are as adorable as they are delicious.

Bakery Ngoc Lan’s Vietnamese-style filled bao buns are hand-crafted to resemble pigs, pandas, and even the Japanese character Hello Kitty.

Pig bread contains taro pastry cream; the kitten has a mung bean custard inside; and the panda bun is served simple – sweet and without filling.

Ngoc Lan Bakery also makes special seasonal holiday buns and has created other buns for animals including tigers, cows, hedgehogs, rabbits, bees, turtles and dogs.

While they’re nowhere near as cute, the bakery’s savory buns are just as complex. Pork buns contain ground pork, quail eggs and sausage; combined meat buns are filled with ground pork, sausage, quail eggs and salted eggs; chicken and mushroom buns are made with ground chicken and mushrooms; and the vegetable breads contain tofu, mushrooms, leeks and carrots. BBQ pork buns are also offered regularly.

The steamed buns are sold individually and their price ranges from $ 1.25 to $ 3.50. They can be bought to take away or steamed and eaten in the bakery.

The steamed buns originated in China and were brought to Vietnam by Cantonese immigrants. The dough is prepared in a variety of colors, wrapped around a sweet or savory pre-baked filling, shaped, decorated by hand and finally steamed.

Ngoc Lan Bakery is located at 11209 Bellaire Boulevard in Chinatown, Houston. The store is open every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Wednesdays when it is closed. Arrive with cash on hand or prepare to pay via Venmo – The bakery does not accept credit or debit cards. According to their social media pages, the bakery’s most popular items often sell out before closing time, so place an order early if you’re hoping to buy something specific.
